The Abbey Studio, established in 1982 and located on Boston's south shore, in Hingham, Massachusetts, is a professional calligraphy studio.

We create hand lettered documents to recognize outstanding achievement, volunteer service, benefactors, retirement, distinguished service, and honorary degrees, as well as personal gifts of poetry, scripture and memorials.

Using the same materials and techniques that have been employed for centuries, we transform your words of tribute into a work of art that will be treasured and admired for many years.

For those interested in learning the craft of calligraphy and gold leaf illumination, we offer courses in our studio classroom. During alternating fall semesters, we offer a one-semester, full-time course in calligraphy, manuscript illumination and bookbinding. We also conduct manuscript study trips to museums and libraries in the United States and Europe. We are currently in the planning stages for two European trips that will take place in 2012 and 2013. For details, click trip. The first trip will be to the South of France for a classroom abroad experience. The second trip will be a book trip, geared to those interested in viewing illuminated manuscripts. A recent collaboration between Maryanne Grebenstein and Elizabeth Rideout is being sold through Kelmscott Bookshop in Baltimore, MD. Edgar Allan Poe's poem Annabel Lee has been hand lettered and gilded by Maryanne. Elizabeth completed the manuscript with a hand made case of marbled paper and silk over book board.
