The Abbey Studio, a calligraphy studio, was established in 1982 on Boston’s south shore in Hingham, Massachusetts. We are pleased to announce our second location in Marblehead, MA opening November 17, 2016! Stop in to see our studio/shop in Old Town at 84 Washington Street. We create hand-lettered documents to recognize outstanding achievement, volunteer service, benefactors, retirement, distinguished service, and honorary degrees. We also create custom designed invitations, personal gifts of poetry or scripture, and memorial tributes.
Using the same materials and techniques that have been employed by scribes for centuries, we transform your words of tribute into a work of art that will be treasured and admired for many years. To view specific products and samples of our work, please click the link of interest: Corporate Recognition Awards, School/University Awards and Diplomas, Invitations, Personal Gifts, or Hand Made Books.
For those interested in learning the craft of calligraphy and gold leaf illumination, we offer courses in our studio classroom and several other locations in New England and Washington, DC. Read more . . .
We also organize trips. Some of our trips are ‘book’ trips where we visit museums, libraries and art foundations within the US and abroad to view illuminated manuscripts. Others are ‘classroom abroad’ excursions, where participants live as artists-in-residence with guided studio time.

Our most unique and special creations are our one-of-a-kind and limited edition manuscript books. These books are completely hand-lettered, hand-decorated, and hand-bound. Our books contain poetry, scripture, or prose. We also accept commissions to create commemorative books for occasions such as a wedding, a birth, a memorial, a retirement, or even a marriage proposal! Read more . . .
